New Chair for Housing & Care 21

Stephen Hughes has been appointed as Chair of Housing & Care 21, succeeding Lord Ben Stoneham who completes his agreed term of office in September.

Stephen has extensive local government experience and has been a Board member at Housing & Care 21 for four years. He was previously Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council and was involved in a number of significant property developments including New Street Station and the Library of Birmingham.

Bruce Moore, Chief Executive of Housing & Care 21 commented: “I would like to thank Lord Stoneham for the significant contribution he has made to Housing & Care 21 over the last seven years. He has guided us into a position of considerable strength and success and leaves us in a strong position. I am delighted that Stephen will be driving this work forward in what is such a pivotal role for the organisation.”

Housing & Care 21 have an ambitious build programme across the country and have committed to providing 2,100 new Extra Care properties and 210 new retirement housing properties by 2021 to ensure that more older people of modest means are able to live independently for as long as possible. The past few years have seen significant improvements at Housing & Care 21 with a focus on quality, efficiency and development. The appointment of Stephen as Chair will ensure that this work continues but with new impetus and drive for the organisation to fulfil its purpose and potential.

Stephen commented: “The organisation is in a strong position and I am looking forward to taking up the role of Chair in September to continue the valuable work being done to help support older people to live independently with the care and support they need.”
