New retirement bungalows on show in Southwick

A show home has been officially opened at a £2.1 million development of bungalows for older people in Sunderland.

Bardolph Drive in Southwick will feature 30 two-bedroom modern bungalows for people aged 55 and over. They are due to be ready for residents to move into in April.

Housing & Care 21, which is developing the scheme in partnership with Sunderland Council, Keepmoat and the Homes and Communities Agency, has already seen significant interest in the new bungalows and is expecting the show property, which was officially opened on Friday (Feb 13) to attract even more.

Councillor Graeme Miller, Portfolio Holder for Health, Housing and Adult Services, said: “We are committed to working with our housing and community partners to provide older people with the type of specialist, supported accommodation they want to suit their individual needs.

“These new bungalows being provided in Southwick as part of a wider Extra Care housing development are the latest example of what’s being achieved.

“Developments like this are only possible working with partners such as Housing & Care 21 and Keepmoat. The bungalows are proving to be very popular, and I look forward to seeing the first residents move in.”

Next to the bungalows will be a new Extra Care housing scheme named Gildacre Fields. This will provide 100 high quality retirement apartments with care and support services available on-site. Communal facilities will include a restaurant, hair salon, treatment room, residents’ lounge and laundry.

Claire Charlton, Locality Manager for Housing & Care 21 added: “This is another exciting scheme which offers older people in Sunderland independent living with support and care available close at hand.

“The new bungalows and Extra Care apartments together on site will create a cohesive and supportive community. I would encourage anyone thinking about their future options to come along to the show home and see what is on offer.”

Mark Kearney, Operations Director for Keepmoat in the North East, said: “We are delighted to once again be working in partnership with Sunderland Council and Housing & Care 21 in the development of Bardolph drive and the supporting Extra Care development, Gildacre Fields.  This scheme continues to build upon our strong relationships and will prove to be another excellent housing development and care facility in Sunderland.”

The Bardolph Drive bungalows will be ready for occupation in April 2015. There are seven bungalows for rent and 23 for sale on a shared ownership basis, with purchase prices starting from £33,750, based on a 25% purchase. Gildacre Fields is due to be completed in February 2016.
