Older residents won't be lonely this Xmas
Older Bradford residents need not be lonely this Christmas after one of our housing schemes in the town announced it will throw its doors open on Christmas Day.
The team at Kipling Court, a retirement housing scheme in Greengates, is inviting local residents who would otherwise be alone to enjoy a free Christmas dinner at the court.
One lady who has signed up has spent the last 20 years on her own on Christmas Day, and the invite is being extended to anyone in the area that may be alone.
Kipling Court manager, Lorraine McKnight, who is running the event alongside day centre manager Annice Brearley, said: “We’re so pleased to be able to make a difference and spread a bit of Christmas cheer.
“Some of the people who have signed up have had their Christmas meal alone for many years so it’s great to be able to make sure this year will be different for them.
“There is a great community spirit here at Kipling Court and we wanted any older residents in the area who might be on their own to know that they don’t have to be. They can come here, have their Christmas meal with all the trimmings and enjoy the company of others. We’ll make sure they feel very welcome.
“We’ve had a number of donations of food and goods from local residents and businesses. I must say a big thank you to all those who have helped us but we still need help in the form of food donations and anyone who is willing to give up an hour of their time to provide some entertainment.”
Lorraine and Annice have been helped by local businesses including The Lane Ends pub, whose landlady Denise Keay has been collecting food donations from locals ahead of the day. And The George and Dragon pub has also been running raffles to raise cash for the event.
The Haigh Hall Road court will open its doors from 10am. As well as Christmas dinner there will be a raffle, Christmas carols and other festive fun.
Places are still available for older residents, anyone who wishes to attend or can help by donating items like turkeys, mince pies and crackers can contact Lorraine directly on 0370 192 4955.
