Double Derby street party set for Friday 6 June

residents_celebrating_with_champagne_outside.jpgHandyside Court in Rowena Close is hosting a special street party on Friday 6th June. Firstly to commemorate 70 years since the D-Day landings and also to celebrate Housing & Care 21’s 50th anniversary. The event will run from 11am to 4.30pm.

Among the attractions are an entertainer dressed in uniform and residents will share their wartime experiences in a series of speeches. Guests at the event, which has been organised by residents Frank and Sue Preston, will enjoy a three course meal as well as afternoon tea with sandwiches and cakes. They will even have goodie bags to reflect rationing.

Housing & Care 21 began life as the Royal British Legion Housing Association and its roots are in the housing of ex-service men and women, so the double celebration is quite fitting.

Eilish Smyth, Court Manager for Housing & Care 21 said: “Everyone is looking forward to this special day and we will also be joined by visitors from outside the court. Handyside Court is a popular scheme with a lot of activity going on and it’s good for everyone to get together to celebrate these two special occasions.”

Handyside Court, which opened in 2009, is Housing & Care 21’s first extra care scheme in Derby. The leading provider of housing and care for older people is currently developing a second extra scheme, Sunnyfields, in Grange Avenue. The new scheme will complete at the end of this year.
