A new Housing & Care 21 scheme in Portsmouth has been named Maritime House.

A naming ceremony recently took place at the site on Conan Road, Hilsea with representatives from Housing & Care 21, construction company Leadbitter, Portsmouth City Council and Councilor Frank Jonas.

The extra-care scheme is being developed in partnership with Portsmouth City Council and will provide specialist apartments for older people and adults with care needs in the local community. There are 80 one and two bedroom apartments which will become available in February.

The “extra-care” model promotes independence and choice for older people, with self contained, spacious flats, communal facilities, a sociable community, and a 24 hour care service if needed.

Paul Tewkesbury, locality manager at Housing & Care 21, said: “We are pleased with the name Maritime House for this fantastic new development. We believe it’s important that people can be a part of their communities and live in their own homes for as long as possible. Our apartments give older people easy access to communal facilities, care services if needed and ensure they can live independently for longer.”

Cllr Jonas said: “It’s excellent that this scheme gives older people and adults with care needs from the local area both opportunity and choice. Extra care living promotes independence and helps people to lead healthy, full and active lives. In addition the development has fantastic on-site facilities for the both residents and the wider community to use.”

An event to mark the opening of a show flat at Maritime House is taking place on Thursday 9 October. Councilors and staff from Portsmouth City Council and Housing & Care 21 will view the show flat following the cutting of a ribbon.

Housing & Care 21 is inviting the public to view a show flat at the development, which will be open every Tuesday and Thursday from 14 October on Wyllie Road, PO2 9NA.  Members of the public will need to book an appointment by contacting extracarecourts.portsmouth@housingandcare21.co.uk or Graham Pink on 0370 192 4635.
