Poetry competition winner announced

Housing 21 has announced the winner of its first ever residents’ online poetry competition, which it ran last week in support of National Poetry Day.

Winner, Mike Gasper, of Howard Court in Flitwick, Bedfordshire was delighted that his poem ‘Storm at Sea’ was declared the voters’ favourite, taking a large percentage of the 322 votes cast. He faced strong competition from the other 35 poems that were submitted.

Commenting on his success, Mike said: “I've never written a poem before, but I do enjoy words. An Ode is meant to be a story, so I wrote it that way. I entered it for Howard Court and I hope it will put us on the map.”

Housing 21, a leading provider of care, health and housing services for older people, recently launched Odes Online, its website poets’ corner, when it recognised that writing poetry was a popular pastime for residents.

Mike won a £50 shopping voucher. Read the winning poem.
