Naming ceremony for new housing scheme
The epic fantasy novel “Lord of the Rings” has provided the inspiration for the name of a new Warwick housing scheme. Rohan Gardens, in All Saints Road, was officially named in a special celebration this week with the development partners.
Representatives from Housing 21, Warwickshire County Council, Warwick District Council, Willmott Dixon and Davis Langdon gathered at the site to celebrate the naming as well as taking the opportunity to view the build progress.
In J.R. Tolkiens’ famous book the name Rohan refers to a fictitious realm. The author had links to the town and was married to local resident, Edith Bratt, at St Mary Immaculate Church in Warwick.
The extra care development for older people will comprise 42 two-bedroom apartments which will be available for rent and shared ownership. In addition to communal facilities which will include a restaurant and hairdressing salon, Rohan Gardens will provide 24 hour care and support tailored to individual need.
Kris Peach, Regional Operations Director for Housing 21 said: “We’re delighted with the progress being made on Rohan Gardens and it’s pleasing that its name is a reference to someone linked to the town.
“This development will provide residents with well appointed apartments in a safe, secure and comfortable environment and I’m very much looking forward to welcoming the residents when the scheme completes.”
County Councillor Izzi Seccombe, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care, said: “We are delighted that we have taken another step forward to give older people the opportunity to live independently and safely in their local community. This scheme, which is making fantastic use of county council land, will benefit older people by giving them more choice and control about how they live in later life.”
The scheme is due for completion in March 2013. There is already a lot of interest in the apartments, which will be available to people aged 55 and over, who have a housing or personal care need and who have a local connection to the Warwick District Council area.
