Official naming for Thatcham accommodation

West Berkshire Council held a special ceremony last week to officially name the new older people’s extra care accommodation under construction in Thatcham.

The development will be known as Alice Bye Court and will provide 51 apartments for rent and shared ownership, specifically designed to meet the needs of residents aged over 55. The scheme will provide accommodation alongside care and support services, as well as a range of resources which will be available for community use.

The name was put forward by the Thatcham Historical Society, because of the significant role that Alice Bye played in the history of the town.

Dr Nick Young, Chairman of Thatcham Historical Society, said: “Alice Bye created one of the earliest charities in Thatcham around 1413, giving a burgage tenement to the churchwardens.  We thought the name Alice Bye Court would not only highlight an important person from our past but also the charitable nature of so many of its inhabitants, past and present.”

Due for completion in spring 2012, the new facility has been commissioned by the Council in partnership with Housing 21 who will manage the scheme.  With significant funding from the Council, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has also invested more than £3m in the project to enable the development to progress.

Joe Mooney, West Berkshire Executive Councillor for Community Care said: “I am very happy with the choice of name for this new development as it has good local heritage that deserves recognition. I am pleased to see the building work progressing and I look forward to seeing the first show flat opening in the autumn.”
