Housing 21 trials new reminiscence aid
Residents at Alrewych Court and Mattesley Court in Walsall have recently experienced an innovative new product called ‘Reminiscence Pods’.
Reminiscence pods are a 1950's pop-up living room, complete with authentic furniture and a fully working 50’s television and radio which play a full library of programmes and films from that time. Even the wallpaper and newspapers that come with the pods date back to the 1950s.
At Walsall, residents really engaged with the trial and even added their own bits and pieces of memorabilia to the layout.
The pods aim to offer a naturally calming and therapeutic experience and are helping to improve the life and well-being of older residents, especially of those with dementia. Most importantly, research shows that reminiscence rooms reduce dementia patients’ dependence on anti-psychotic drugs.
