Greyfriars extra care scheme underway

A special ceremony has marked the start of construction on an extra care housing development for the elderly.

The 'ground breaking' ceremony for the £4.3 million scheme involved project partners: Housing 21, North Yorkshire Council, Richmondshire District Council and contractor Frank Haslam Milan North East.

Due to be completed next Spring, Greyfriars will provide a new model of housing with care and support to replace Richmondshire District Council's sheltered housing scheme at Lile Close and the County Council's residential care home at Richmond House.  The scheme will provide 39 two bedroom apartments for older people with a range of care and support needs.

The new scheme will include options for rent and for purchase on a shared ownership basis.

Each apartment will be designed for wheelchair access and will have its own:

  • sitting room
  • fully fitted kitchen
  • walk-in shower
  • non-slip flooring to the kitchen and bathroom.

An on-site team will provide care and support, tailored to meet individual needs. Communal facilities will include:

  • lounge
  • restaurant
  • hairdressing salon
  • landscaped gardens.

A learning disability support base will also operate from the scheme.
