Legendary footballer cuts turf at Madeley

FOOTBALL legend, Gordon Banks, joined in the celebration to mark the start of work on an exciting project to provide a new extra care scheme alongside a community hub and village centre in Madeley, Staffordshire.

The 1966 World Cup player cut the first turf on the site which will provide 63 apartments and a 200-seat capacity village hall.

As well as featuring an array of environmental features including solar panels, a ground source heat pump and a 'green' roof, the scheme will provide facilities for the local community including:

  • a cafĂ©
  • advice centre
  • children's centre
  • outreach health work
  • a range of rooms for use by community organisations.

The land will be developed for the benefit of people and wildlife, and includes a children's play area.

Joining scores of villagers and representatives of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, Staffordshire County Council, Madeley Parish Council and Housing 21 - the partners in the project - Gordon Banks commented: "I think it will be a wonderful asset for the village. There will be facilities for the old and the young, right next to each other."
